This Ceremonial Headdress was hand made by Monacan Sioux elder George Whitewolf, who was. A member of the Monacan Tribe, at the. As a Monacan Tribal leader and spiritual adviser he was also the assistant chief before passing. He is known, all over the world, for making authentic native regalia (clothing), including buckskin dresses and other items that were featured in movies and television shows. Before his passing, many people interviewed him. Here is one of his statements. I make all kinds of Indian thingsI do bone carvings, but my main thing that has evolved over the years is making outfits for Indian people that dance. I do Indian traditional style. If its a hand-tanned piece, then I have to get the deer hides, I have to dress them out and tan them, you leave them white or else smoke them over a fire. And then, theyre tanned with animal brains. A long time ago, the Creator gave us a gift, and that gift, he showed us that all animals have enough brains in their own head to tan their own hides: be it a squirrel, a deer, a buffalo, what have you. You put the brains in there, and you rub it in real goodand its a whole process. And when it comes out, it comes out a piece of leather thats as soft as a piece of silk. Its very, very, very soft. I dont use any patterns. Its all in my head, everything that I do is either hand sewn or hand lacedtheres no machines in my work. God give me these talents, and I can just do it. The animal who gave its life to feed and clothe the hunter is respected for its gift. HEADDRESS MEASUREMENTS: The measurements are: inside of the leather head piece is 23″ in diameter and 8″ deep. The leather headpiece is adorned with 30 decorated feathers. They are painted to represent Eagle feathers. Each feather has red cloth tightly bound on the top with white plumes. Because of the old age of this headdress some of the feathers are damaged. At the end of each feather are more plumes and horsehair. The horsehair measures over 18″ and the feathers measure over 13″ including the red cloth. Adorning the top of the headdress you will find leather and quillwork. Even with it’s age the quillwork in in tact. The quillwork measures 10″ x 1″wide. At the end of the quillwork you will find hand made beaded medallions that measure over 2 in diameter. Hanging down from the medallion are 15 blue, red & yellow traditional ribbons and also a. This item is extremely well made and as you can see all hand sewn including all the bead-work. You can see signs of age on this magnificent piece. Today, many Native American Tribal Nations, still value garments made from hides and fur, for their aesthetic appeal, warmth, durability, and comfort. American Indians who perform traditional and powwow dances often wear leather regalia and traditional headdresses because of their beauty and its association with the Native past.
