This horned Ogoni mask from Nigeria is very old and has developed one of the crustiest outside surfaces I have ever seen. You would think that such thick flakes would be constantly dropping off but they are solidly attached. It has taken a long time to acquire this patina. Where the crust is lost a soft red finish can be detected. The articulated jaw is functional so that the mask chatters (“talks”) when danced. It is really not possible to tell whether the hinge strings are original or not. It has the typical Ogoni slightly upturned pug nose and squinty eyes. This type of horn is also seen on other Ogoni masks but isn’t common. It comes from an Austrian collection. This is the rare offering of an indisputably old and hard-used example of a beautifully crafted classic Ogoni mask. It is about 14 tall and will be packed with the utmost care (see my feedback). It has been atop a homemade wooden stand until now but has attachment holes for hanging. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Cultures & Ethnicities\African\1900-Now\Masks”.
