I have, for years, specialized in Ogoni masks. They appeal to me in every way. The usual finish on these masks is thin, possibly polychrome, but not encrusted this way. Its very thick acquired surface practically obliterates the features. As with most examples from this culture there is a distinctive headdress or coiffeur, a slightly pugged nose and large pursed lips. Many Ogoni masks, especially old ones, have a hinged (or “articulated”) jaw causing it to “talk” when danced up and down, clattering. The hinges on this one are some sort of raffia, most likely original. It has double pierced ears. The squinty eyes are all but completely crusted over, lessening slightly the immediacy of its stare and giving it a dead and desiccated look. This would be an excellent addition to any serious African art collection. It is only 11 tall, worn on the forehead. Difficult to photograph, I hope my images are clear.
